More TUI flights and holidays have been cancelled following a Government update on the situation in Sri Lanka. It comes amid ongoing political unrest. A statement issued by the Government on Friday said: "A police curfew was declared in 7 areas in the city centre of Colombo and its outskirts: Colombo North, Colombo South, Colombo Central, Negombo, Mount Lavinia, Nugegoda, and Keleniya."
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka, forcing TUI to cancel more fights and holidays, Liverpool Echo reports. TUI had originally cancelled Sri Lanka holidays until the end of June, but now the travel firm has confirmed it is extending this policy throughout July.
The ongoing situation in Sri Lanka has seen people forced to stand in long queues to buy the limited stocks of fuel, cooking gas and foods for months. Months-long street protests and scuffles with police at gas stations have also been reported.
TUI said: "Due to the ongoing political and economic instability in Sri Lanka, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has advised against all but essential travel. As a result, we’ve unfortunately had to cancel all holidays to Sri Lanka departing up to and including July 18 2022. We will be proactively contacting all impacted customers in departure date order to discuss their options.
"Please note this advice does not apply to customers transiting through Sri Lanka’s international airport and customers currently in resort can continue to enjoy their holiday as planned. We will continue to monitor the situation and update customers should there be any further updates. We would like to thank our customers for their understanding at this time."
