TUI, Air France and others cancel flights to and from popular tourist destination

TUI and Air France are among a number of airlines who have cancelled flights to and from a popular tourist destination in the Caribbean.

The ECHO understands many flights are unable to take off from, or land at, airports in a number of islands due to Hurricane Fiona. The tropical storm has left parts of Puerto Rico without power, and left behind landslides and widespread flooding as it headed west towards the Dominican Republic.

No deaths have been reported, but authorities in the US territory said it was too early to estimate the damage from a storm that was still forecast to unleash torrential rain across Puerto Rico on Monday.

Up to 76 centimetres was forecast for Puerto Rico's southern region. As much as 15 inches were projected for the eastern Dominican Republic. Ernesto Morales, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Juan, said: "It's important people understand that this is not over.

He said flooding reached "historic levels", with authorities evacuating or rescuing hundreds of people across the island.

Most flights due to land at or depart from airports on both islands have now been cancelled. A TUI flight due to depart from Punta Cana airport in the Dominican at 5.10pm to Manchester today (Tuesday) has been cancelled.

Similarly, a flight from Manchester that was due to land on the island at 3.10pm was also cancelled. KLM, Air France and British Airways are among carriers to cancel flights out of San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Passengers whose flights have been cancelled should contact their travel operator for further information.
