UK Government 'planning for blackouts and gas shortages' over winter months
The UK Government is reportedly planning for gas shortages and electricity blackouts if the country is hit by a colder winter than average. Households and industry could be asked to curb their energy use in January, according to the government's reasonable worst-case scenario.
Bloomberg said that during four days at the start of 2023 the UK may be forced to adopt emergency measures in order to halt the amount of gas being used across the country.
The dire warning from people, with knowledge of the government's planning, comes after analysts delivered a shock warning that energy bills could top £4,200 in the new year.
The two remaining contenders in the Tory leadership race faced renewed calls to spell out how they would help after Cornwall Insight forecast average bills could hit about £3,582 in October, from £1,971 today, before rising even further in January.
On Monday, Nicola Sturgeon demanded a meeting with outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the cost-of-living crisis.
Dim-witted Scots car thieves realise they've been caught on camera in home CCTV clip
Two bungling thieves were caught on camera making off with a handbag and car keys stolen from a Scots house - moments before stealing the family's car.
The two men made their way into the home of Chrissy and Robert Gray in Arbroath in the early hours of Sunday morning, as the unaware couple sat upstairs watching a film. They snatched Chrissy's handbag, containing her purse, credit cards and family photos, and the keys to her red Honda Civic.
It was only on leaving the property that the burglars realised they had been captured by a Ring video doorbell, which recorded them leaving the house, clutching Chrissy's handbag. One of the thieves points out the doorbell and remarks: "Oh s***, they've got a camera."
His companion then spins round, giving the tiny lens a good look at his face. The pair then try to hide their mugs and walk down the driveway, before making off with Chrissy's car.
Amazon delivery driver sacked after leaving brutal note for mum who wasn't home
An Amazon driver was sacked for leaving a brutal note that labelled a customer who wasn’t at home as “stupid”. Kerry Hodge, 28, was seething after discovering the note which was left by a driver, who had dumped the piece of paper and parcel in a nearby bin.
The rude, poorly scribbled note gave the mum-of-three quite the shock when they found a handwritten message from the now-sacked delivery driver. A note from the former Amazon employee caused quite the stir for Kerry at the time, with the fuming mum posting the note and an image of the parcels to Facebook.
Kerry took to Amazon’s Facebook page to complain to the retailer about the horrible note she received, which led to the sacking of the driver. Posting the photos, Kerry said: “What a lovely note to come home to and to see my parcels have been dumped.”
Scots family terrified as schoolgirl, 10, left unable to walk after hit and run
A schoolgirl has been left unable to walk after being hit by a motorbike while walking in a West Lothian town. Emily McGregor, 10, will spend the rest of her school holidays in hospital after a motorbike mounted the pavement and left her badly injured late on Saturday August 6.
Two thugs on a bike are alleged to have knocked Emily down between Logan Way and Morrison Way in Livingston at around 7.40pm. Mum-of-two Laura, 33, who is heavily pregnant rushed to the scene with her third child after getting the distressing call that her daughter had been injured by a motorbike while she played with friends.
Tragically the youngster is struggling to walk due to her heavy cast because of the severity of the break. The family, who are from the Knightridge area of the town, say they have been left shaken and are now scared to let the kids go out to play because of the prevalence of speeding bikes.
The incident comes just weeks after Emily was named sports ambassador. She says she is gutted that she doesn't know when she will be able to play sports again.
Hospital staff fled in terror after alleged US fugitive jumped out bed and ran at them, court hears
A man accused of being US fugitive Nicholas Rossi made senior hospital staff flee from him in fear for their safety.
Arthur Knight, 35, allegedly behaved in a threatening or abusive manner at a ward at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital on July 5, 2022. Consultant Evelyn Millar claimed wheelchair-bound Knight jumped out of bed and ran at her and nurse Yasmin Bagli.
The pair told Glasgow Sheriff Court this occurred after telling him he was fit to be discharged home. They added Knight - who uses an oxygen mask - was also verbally abusive and allegedly told them to "shut the f*** up."
Court papers state Knight goes by other names such as Nicholas Rossi, Nicholas Alahverdian, Nicholas Brown, Arthur Winston Brown and Arthur Knight Brown. Knight is stated to be on bail from Edinburgh Sheriff Appeal Court where he faces extradition to the USA in relation to an alleged sex attack.
Knight has been stated in court as being a registered sex offender accused of other crimes including fraud and sexual battery. The court heard from Dr Millar, 58, who stated that her patient was known to her as "Arthur Knight Brown."
