As the weekend approaches, the temptation to kick back and order a takeaway instead of sweating over a stove increases. But which of the 494 fast food outlets are worth a go? You could look at Scores on the Doors for a hygiene rating, but that handy website won’t recommend eateries on food quality.
Enter r/Bristol, the dedicated Reddit forum in which users discuss everything from the housing market to local sports teams. Amongst these conversation threads is a treasure trove of restaurant recommendations for anyone seeking a convenient culinary experience.
Started this week by user Jennyfryx, the post is titled “Best takeaway (central-ish) for new parents who’re celebrating an anniversary” and it attracted 63 comments in three days. “As the title says, looking for your best recommendations as we aren't able to head out for a meal,” wrote the original poster (OP). “Need some help!”

Responses included Mexican, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and more. Read on for a selection of those which received the most support from users and consider checking them out next time you don’t feel like cooking.
Chido Wey, Old Market Street - This Mexican restaurant is new to the old city, having opened just two years ago. It is the first bricks and mortar restaurant run by Cono O’Hare, an experienced chef who is “obsessed with” Mexican cuisine.
Reddit user echolenka called its fare the “best Mexican I’ve ever had”, adding that they “couldn’t recommend it more”. PinItYouFairy agreed that the food there is “bloody lovely”, while Takafraka called their nachos and cocktails – which are tequila- and mezcal-based – “incredible”.
Wokyko, Queens Road or Wapping Wharf - The popular Chinese chain is local to Bristol and has four outlets within the city. Each specialises in slightly different things – their Queens Road outlet serves “grab-and-go delicacies” while Wapping Wharf whips up wok-based ramen and rice dishes.
The brand got several shout outs on the Reddit thread including one from queenatom, who recommended it on the basis that they had “also celebrated both an anniversary and my birthday at home with a takeaway”.
Nutmeg, The Mall, Clifton Village - The colourful, mural-adorned walls of this Indian restaurant reflect the vibrancy and variety of foods on offer, inspired by “the diversity of India and its 29 states”, from the “pulse regions of the Himalayas” to the “spice and seafood abundance of tropical south India”.
Its exquisite food has even won a Michelin Plate, meaning it has been featured in the prestigious food guide – something pointed out by Reddit user temptressinateacup, who notes that the prices are nonetheless modest. And blotfrindows seconds this, calling it “a go-to during lockdown birthdays because it's a bit more pricey, but it is just the best”.
Moltobuono, Park Street - When one Bristol Live writer visited this Italian restaurant in early 2020, he enjoyed it so much that he went back the same week. This was probably just as well as, unbeknownst to Mark Taylor, Covid was mere weeks away. Opened in 2018, the trattoria was then so popular that diners were being turned away at the door.
“For Italian it has to be Moltobuono,” blotfrindows boldly claims on Reddit, adding that “the pizza is amazing and it's on the cheaper side of things.” But they especially recommend dining in, as “the atmosphere is lovely”.
Rock Salt, Cotham Hill - If you’re buying takeaway for two and can’t choose a cuisine, then Rock Salt might be the solution. The Redland restaurant serves dishes cooked in both the karahi and the wok, promising “that perfect authentic Indian and Chinese cuisine taste” using “only the best ingredients”.
Redditor esrdin calls their fare “high end quality and not bad on cost”, punctuating their review with a fire emoji. And elmarieclairo seconds the recommendation, writing simply “Rock Salt”. Nuff said. Bon appetit.
