For years, Donald Trump's political strength has rested on a simple advantage: even when his wider approval numbers fall, his core Republican supporters have tended to remain firmly behind him. Now, that loyalty is showing a small but notable crack.
For the first time in NBC News Decision Desk polling, fewer than half of Republicans say they strongly approve of Trump's performance as president. The survey, conducted from 20 August to 1 September, found that 41% of Republicans strongly approved of Trump's job performance. That was down from 52% in a similar survey conducted from 30 March to 13 April.
