Trump's New Greenland Bases Are Planned for a Village of 139 People and an Arctic Dog-Sled Patrol Outpost

US President Donald Trump plans to put two new military bases in Greenland: a southern village and a dog-sled patrol post. He signed the deal with Denmark and Greenland on Tuesday, 22 September. The text names Narsarsuaq, home to 139 people in Statistics Greenland's 2026 count, and Mestersvig in the north-east.

The deal follows months in which Trump pressed for US control of Greenland, refusing until January to rule out force. Instead of ownership, the deal offers Washington new sites and wider military rights. American forces ran an airfield at Narsarsuaq until 1958. Building contracts must go to Greenlandic firms that can do the job.
