Trump’s contractor takes responsibility for Reflecting Pool damage despite president’s vandal claims

  • The contractor behind the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation admitted that faulty work, rather than vandalism , caused the newly installed liner to peel and blister.
  • Donald Trump previously blamed vandals with box-cutters for damaging the pool's lining following the multimillion-dollar refurbishment. Government reports showed workers applied insufficient primer due to human oversight and mixed two incompatible chemicals that overheated.
  • But Atlantic Industrial Coatings, the contractor, told the Trump administration in reports that its design and implementation of the renovation project had fallen short, The New York Times reported. The report was based on government documents, but few specifics were given about them.
  • Federal prosecutors dismissed vandalism charges against several individuals after determining the damage stemmed from a botched installation.
  • Atlantic Industrial Coatings, which was awarded $14.7 million for the project, plans to repair the pool while it remains closed to the public.
