Former President Donald Trump is encouraging Republicans in Michigan to focus on Black voters in Detroit and other predominantly African American areas in the swing state, according to state GOP leaders. The Michigan GOP leaders recently met in Florida to strategize the Trump campaign's approach to winning the state in 2024, with a particular emphasis on southeast Michigan, which has significant minority voter populations critical of President Joe Biden.
The state GOP chair highlighted the importance of reaching out to African American and Hispanic voters across Michigan, including areas like Saginaw, Wayne County (home to metro Detroit), Muskegon, and other regions. Both Biden and Trump are expected to fiercely compete for Michigan, a state that flipped Democratic in 2020 and is crucial for both candidates' electoral prospects.
