President-elect Donald Trump is set to meet with TikTok CEO Shou Chew at his Mar-a-Lago Club this afternoon, according to a source familiar with the meeting. The meeting, which was pre-scheduled, comes in the wake of Trump hinting at a possible reversal of the impending ban on the popular social media app TikTok in the United States.
During a news conference earlier on Monday, Trump expressed a fondness for TikTok, suggesting a connection between his electoral success and the platform. He mentioned winning the youth vote by a significant margin and alluded to TikTok potentially playing a role in that achievement. However, it's worth noting that exit polls showed Trump actually lost the 18-29-year-old demographic to Vice President Kamala Harris by 11 points.
TikTok is currently facing the threat of a ban on January 19 unless it can persuade its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform to a new owner. In a bid to stave off the ban, TikTok has petitioned the Supreme Court to temporarily halt the process.
Reports indicate that the TikTok CEO has been eager to meet with Trump since the latter's election victory. While the CEO was spotted at Mar-a-Lago in early December, this meeting is believed to be the first official encounter between the two since Trump's win in November.
