Trump team wasn’t aware of president’s sniper and drone plan for DC arch

  • Donald Trump announced he was planning to equip the 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery with snipers, drones, and military storage.
  • Officials with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation told advocacy groups on Tuesday that the administration has not submitted any plans that line up with the president’s dreams. The Washington Post first reported the discussions.
  • The preservation council abruptly ended its federally required historic impact review last week, passing final recommendations directly to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
  • Advocacy groups, including the Cultural Landscape Foundation and Public Citizen, strongly condemned the administration's decision to bypass public review.
  • Senator Jeff Merkley introduced legislation to block federal funding for the arch, while Public Citizen filed a lawsuit to halt construction.
