President Trump announced that Apple Maps and Google Maps have updated Lake Ontario's name to Lake America for U.S. users following an executive order.
The mapping change comes amid an escalating trade war between the U.S. and Canada featuring 50 percent tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.
MapQuest declined to adopt the new name, prompting a surge in downloads of the mapping service.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the move, asserting the historic body of water will always be Lake Ontario.
Canadian leadership urged the Trump administration to stop posting social media memes and focus on serious trade negotiations.
