A conversation on The Dean Withers Show that began with a defence of Donald Trump's immigration policies ended with a self-described Republican admitting that the same standard he would apply to Joe Biden could also affect his support for Trump.
During the heated podcast discussion, the supporter repeatedly invoked the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty' when challenged over fatal shootings involving federal immigration agents. But when the host reversed the scenario and asked how he would react if Biden defended a similar shooting of a conservative figure, the answer became far less certain.
The Debate Started With Immigration
The supporter said he had backed Republicans since he was 18 and praised Trump's immigration policies, particularly his approach to illegal crossings. He argued that people who enter a country unlawfully or overstay visas can legally face removal and said he opposed criticism of officers enforcing immigration laws.
The host challenged that position by pointing to allegations of excessive force and disputed conduct by federal immigration agents. The discussion then moved from immigration policy to the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota.
Innocent Until Proven Guilty Became the Flashpoint
The supporter maintained that accusations of murder should not be made before an investigation and trial. The host, however, argued that the legal presumption of innocence does not prevent ordinary people from forming conclusions based on evidence they have seen.
'When we have a video of an innocent man getting 12 bullets in his back while he's on the ground unarmed, you say, I'm going to deny my ears and I'm going to deny my eyes because it is innocent until proven guilty,' the host said.
The supporter eventually acknowledged that someone who personally witnessed a murder could reasonably describe what they had seen as evidence, even before a court case had concluded.
Trump Was Put Through the Same Test
The host then introduced a hypothetical involving Biden. If Biden were president and publicly defended someone who had killed conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, the host asked whether the supporter could continue backing him.
'Probably not,' the supporter replied.
The host then asked him to apply the same reasoning to Trump. The supporter initially hesitated, saying that a president's record included more than one issue and that he still agreed with conservative policies.
But the comparison appeared to force a broader reconsideration. When asked if Trump's conduct in the disputed shootings should change his view, the supporter replied: 'Maybe on that area, probably.'
He also acknowledged that some of Trump's more extreme rhetoric sounded 'dictator-like', although he said he had become accustomed to Trump making provocative comments and initially viewed some remarks as joking or political showmanship.
The supporter initially struggled with the distinction between civil liability and criminal guilt. The host used that distinction to challenge his repeated reliance on 'innocent until proven guilty'.
By the end, the supporter did not announce that he had abandoned Trump altogether. Instead, he acknowledged that the argument had made him reconsider his position on the specific conduct being discussed.
