Former President Donald Trump recently shared a fake image on social media that depicted someone resembling Vice President Kamala Harris speaking in front of a communist symbol at the Democratic National Convention. The image, which was altered, showed the word 'Chicago' in the corner of the arena where the convention was taking place, along with a prominent hammer and sickle, a symbol associated with communism, placed in front of Harris.
When asked about the altered image and Trump's decision to share it, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, Jason Miller, responded with the word 'Kamunism,' an apparent attempt to link the vice president's name to communism. Miller also shared a cover of the New York Post with the headline 'Kamunism.'
The platform where the fake image was shared has a policy against disseminating 'synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media that may deceive or confuse people and lead to harm.' The policy allows for labeling such content as 'misleading media,' although enforcement of this policy appears inconsistent. As of Sunday morning, Trump's post had not been labeled to indicate that the image was fake, and the platform has not yet responded to requests for comment.
