Trump Rally Forces Schools in Latino-Majority City to Shut Down Over Concerns for Student Safety After Racist Puerto Rico Remarks

A school district in Allentown, a minority-majority city in Pennsylvania, canceled classes for nearly 16,000 students "out of an abundance of caution" ahead of former President Donald Trump's rally at the PPL Center after racist remarks were made against Latinos at his most recent rally.

"After thoughtful consideration and in coordination with the Allentown Police Department, out of an abundance of caution, all Allentown School District Schools will be closed for students on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, due to a planned political rally in the city of Allentown," the district wrote in an email sent to parents and staff on Monday, obtained by Lehigh Valley News,

The email added that the crowds, traffic and disruptions "may impact the safety and security of our students and staff." The district also chose to cancel after-school activities and athletic events.

The cautionary message came after a slew of racist comments were made regarding Latinos during Trump's rally in New York City on Sunday.

During his opening remarks, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe said Puerto Rico is a "floating island of garbage" and claimed Latinos "love making babies," drawing ire across both parties.

According to the 2020 Census, 33,500 residents in Allentown identified as Puerto Ricans.
