Trump Insists on 'Total Military Victory' in Iran & Lashes Out at 'Treasonous' Reporter Aboard Air Force One

President Donald Trump accused a New York Times reporter of " treasonous" coverage on the Iran war during a tense exchange while returning from China aboard Air Force One on Friday.

The exchange happened when Trump was departing China after a high-stakes summit with President Xi Jinping. There, New York Times reporter David Sanger asked Trump about Iran and the purpose of further bombing after weeks of U.S. military action. Trump rejected the premise and insisted the campaign had been a "total military victory."

"I had a total military victory," Trump said. "But the fake news guys like you, write incorrectly. You're a fake guy." Trump then listed what he said the U.S. had destroyed in Iran, including the country's navy, air force, anti-aircraft systems, radar, and multiple tiers of military leadership.

The president argued that reporters and outlets he accused of distorting the outcome were preventing the public from seeing the campaign as a complete success. "We've had a total victory except for people like you that don't write the truth," Trump said. "I actually think it's sort of treasonous what you write. You and The New York Times, and CNN, I would say, are the worst."

The remark drew immediate criticism. Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh responded to the incident on social media, writing, "He's the biggest f---ing crybaby in all of human history."

He’s the biggest fucking crybaby in all of human history.

Journalist Radley Balko wrote, "We've become numb to this stuff, but a president accusing a journalist of treason -- a capital crime -- for reporting on an ongoing war is not normal, and we should never accept it as normal."

The Constitution defines treason narrowly as "only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court."

Federal law says a person convicted of treason "shall suffer death" or face at least five years in prison, a fine, and disqualification from holding federal office. The law does not specify hanging, but it does make treason one of the rare federal crimes that can carry capital punishment.

The Air Force One confrontation followed days of similar language from Trump and his allies over media coverage of the Iran war. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Trump pressed acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to pursue aggressive investigations into leaks about the conflict, including stories the president labeled "treason."

The report said subpoenas had targeted reporters' records from several outlets as the administration sought to identify sources behind national security reporting. Trump has also accused news organizations of giving Iran "false hope" by reporting that Tehran retained military capacity despite U.S. strikes. He also described such coverage as "virtual treason" earlier this week.

The president's comments came as the conflict with Iran remains unresolved. Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday that Tehran "cannot trust the Americans at all," while Trump said aboard Air Force One that the U.S. controlled the Strait of Hormuz and had "wiped out" Iran's armed forces "essentially."
