Trump gives Iran 48-hour ultimatum to reopen Strait of Hormuz

  • U.S. President Donald Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, threatening to "obliterate" its power grid if the Strait of Hormuz is not fully reopened.
  • Iran responded by opening the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping except vessels linked to "Iran's enemies" after tanker traffic was halted, causing oil and diesel prices to surge.
  • On Friday, Trump criticised NATO allies for refusing to help secure the strait, though he later claimed it would soon “open itself”.
  • UK Housing Secretary Steve Reed would not be drawn on whether he supported Trump’s 48-hour deadline.
  • Japan's Foreign Minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, indicated that Japan might consider deploying its military for minesweeping in the Strait of Hormuz if a ceasefire is achieved.
