Former President Donald Trump has endorsed a second GOP candidate in the primary for Washington’s 4th Congressional district. The aim is to challenge Rep. Dan Newhouse, one of ten Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in 2021 following the January 6 Capitol protests.
In a post on Truth Social before Tuesday’s vote, Trump expressed his support for Tiffany Smiley, describing her as a 'tremendous America First Candidate' for the district. Trump also reiterated his endorsement for Jerrod Sessler, emphasizing their alignment on key issues.
Trump criticized Newhouse as a 'weak and pathetic RINO' who he believes made a regrettable decision in voting for his impeachment. Trump urged Republicans to unite behind Smiley or Sessler to secure victory in November.
Smiley, a Triage Nurse, Veterans Advocate, Army Wife, and Mother, is positioned as a strong supporter of the 'Make America Great Again' movement. Trump highlighted her commitment to addressing key national issues such as inflation, economic growth, border security, military and veterans' welfare, and Second Amendment rights.
Newhouse, seeking his sixth term, acknowledged the division among constituents regarding his impeachment vote. He emphasized the importance of addressing national challenges and expressed gratitude for the support he receives despite disagreements on specific issues.
Smiley, in her campaign, outlined priorities including preserving dams in the lower Snake River, combating illegal drug trafficking, and promoting agriculture in central Washington. She emphasized the need for genuine representation that reflects the district's values.
The primary race in Washington’s 4th Congressional district underscores the ongoing political dynamics within the Republican Party and the significance of key endorsements in shaping electoral outcomes.
