Morning everyone. Donald Trump says he’s “made a great settlement in the war with Iran”, and claims a peace deal approved by Iran’s supreme leader will be signed “very soon, maybe over the weekend”. Bearing in mind, of course, that we’ve heard similar claims before.

Back home, our political team analyse Labor’s strategy for countering One Nation (see also Full Story), and we investigate the shadowy conservative group swinging its weight behind the anti-abortion movement.

And the World Cup is under way – we are following all the action and hear from the man who could be the Socceroos’ break-out star.

Australia

  • Going back | A shadowy rightwing Christian group called CitizenGo with roots in an ultra-conservative Spanish organisation is emerging as a new voice in the anti-abortion debate.

  • Labor playbook | A list of talking points drawn up by Labor to help MPs combat the rise of One Nation includes calling out Pauline Hanson’s “appalling record” on wages and job security to undermine her self-styled image as a champion of the working class.

  • Herzog trial | Twenty-five people who were charged after they protested against the visit of the Israeli president will face a six-week joint trial in July next year.

  • On the run | Police in Victoria have appealed for information about a prisoner on the run for six weeks since he slipped his prison minders at his brother’s funeral.

  • Women ‘punished’ | Every female employee of the NSW police force who participated in a review into its culture had experienced or observed “overt or covert harassment, undermining and belittlement”, a scathing report has found.

World

  • El Niño forms | El Niño, the climate pattern that brings warmer and drier weather to Australia, has formed in a warmed-up Pacific Ocean and is expected to grow to historic strength, US meteorologists said overnight.

  • Peace close? | In breaking news as we send out this newsletter, Donald Trump has cancelled planned strikes against Iran, claiming he and the Iranian supreme leader have agreed a peace deal that could be signed as soon as this weekend. Follow developments live. Meanwhile the World Bank says the global economy has slowed to its lowest level since Covid.

  • Stock launch | Elon Musk’s SpaceX is set to launch the biggest stock market float in history amid warnings that it may be overvalued.

  • Riot control | Police have fired plastic bullets and received reinforcements from Great Britain in an effort to contain race riots in Northern Ireland after a horrific stabbing incident on Sunday.

  • Bigfoot, tall tale | Recent reports of people seeing a giant ape-like creature in rural Ontario have reignited fervour going back decades about a bipedal creature known as Sasquatch or Bigfoot.

World Cup

  • Match catch-up | Mexico v South Africa has kicked off the tournament this morning. Follow it live here.

  • Socceroos latest | Full-back Jordan Bos could be one of Australia’s stars of the World Cup but he tells Jack Snape he’s determined to keep his feet on the ground. Mo Touré sent a scare through camp days before the team’s World Cup opener after he missed training, and we examine the Socceroos’ opponents in that match, Turkey.

  • Off the pitch | Omar Artan, the Somali referee prevented from officiating at the World Cup, will take charge of the European Super Cup in August, Uefa has announced.

  • What to watch today | Our team guide today is England whose German coach, Thomas Tuchel, will be hoping to provide a second star for the jersey.
