President Donald Trump dismissed reports of deteriorating conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln as "fake" on Monday, saying people on the carrier describe it as "beautifully maintained and beautifully taken care of" despite scrutiny over its extended deployment.
Trump Rejects Reports Of Poor Conditions
When CNN’s Kristen Holmes asked whether the carrier had enough food, Trump said it did. He said an unnamed retired admiral told him, "I have been on ships much longer than that, sir," adding that "people on the Lincoln say it’s beautifully taken care of,” according to a report by The Hill.
The Lincoln left San Diego in November 2025 and has remained deployed for more than 260 days, including more than 200 days without a port call, while supporting U.S. operations in the Iran war. Reuters described the stretch last week as a record for the modern Navy.
Pentagon Defends Crew As Lawmakers Press
The administration has pushed back against accounts of food shortages, plumbing failures, water-quality problems and mental-health strain. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last week called reports "completely misrepresented", saying the Navy gives crews "everything we can provide them at every single moment."
CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper offered a more qualified defense after visiting the Lincoln. He said the ship had "among the lowest number of cases related to mental health" among the Navy’s 11 active carriers and praised the crew’s "camaraderie, teamwork and resilience." But Cooper added, "This doesn’t mean that all is perfect," describing prolonged service at sea as "uniquely challenging and tough."
Democratic lawmakers have continued pressing Navy leaders for answers. House members recently called reports involving sailor mental health and living conditions "deeply troubling", while Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) warned extended deployments risk becoming "a feature rather than an exception."
George Washington Heads Toward Middle East
The Lincoln originally deployed to the Indo-Pacific before Washington redirected it toward the Middle East in January as tensions with Tehran escalated. Trump then described the carrier-led force as a "massive Armada" headed toward Iran.
The USS George Washington is moving from the Pacific toward the Middle East to replace the Lincoln, whose roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines have supported combat operations for months.
Trump maintained Monday that concern over the carrier has been overstated, calling its time at sea a "good period of time" and insisting it remains well cared for.
