Captain Smit Machchhar has been praised as a hero after a terrifying incident aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv left 174 people facing a potential catastrophe.
Machchhar, an Indian national, was reportedly stabbed by his co-pilot during the flight before managing to fight back and open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew then entered the cockpit and helped overpower the attacker, allowing additional pilots travelling on the aircraft to take control. The plane eventually made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Machchhar was taken to hospital in Saudi Arabia and was reported to be in stable condition. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised him as a 'true hero,' saying his actions helped prevent a catastrophic mid-air disaster.
Trump Praises Pilot for Preventing Disastrous Attack
Donald Trump also praised the pilot when discussing the incident with reporters at the White House.
Trump said he had spoken at length with Netanyahu and described the pilot and passengers as having prevented what he characterised as a potentially disastrous attack. However, Trump also acknowledged that he was recounting information given to him by Netanyahu and said he could not independently confirm every detail of the account.
The comments came as investigators were still working to establish exactly what happened inside the cockpit and why the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar.
Why Was the Pilot's Identity Reported So Differently?
One of the strangest aspects of the story has been the confusion surrounding the nationalities of those involved.
Early reports circulating in Israeli media reportedly gave conflicting descriptions of the pilots, with some accounts identifying them as Omani and Emirati, while others described them as Russian and Ukrainian. Reuters later reported that the wounded captain was identified as Indian national Smit Machchhar, while an Israeli official identified the co-pilot as an Omani national.
The confusion appears to have been fuelled by the speed at which information emerged during an unfolding aviation emergency. The identities of other pilots who were travelling on the aircraft and subsequently helped take control have also received less consistent reporting.
Machchhar's identity, however, was subsequently confirmed by Israeli officials and the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia.
Netanyahu Compares Incident to Potential 9/11 Disaster
Netanyahu described the incident in exceptionally serious terms, with reports quoting him as saying the pilots and passengers had prevented a potential '9/11 disaster.'
That comparison refers to the possibility of a passenger aircraft being deliberately crashed, rather than establishing that the incident was part of an organised 9/11-style terrorist plot.
The motive of the co-pilot remains unclear. Netanyahu himself later indicated that he did not believe the incident necessarily constituted a conventional hijacking and suggested a possible suicide attempt, while stressing that the investigation was ongoing.
Passengers Helped Prevent a Catastrophe
Machchhar was not the only person credited with helping save the flight.
Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayun entered the cockpit during the crisis and helped subdue the attacker. Other passengers and crew members also intervened, while off-duty pilots aboard the flight ultimately helped stabilise the aircraft and land it safely in Saudi Arabia.
The plane had reportedly plunged thousands of feet during the struggle, making the intervention particularly urgent.
The incident has since prompted Israel to discuss tighter security checks for pilots flying into the country. Flydubai has urged caution over speculation while authorities continue investigating the attack and its motive.
Heroic Rescue Surrounded by Unanswered Questions
Machchhar's actions have been widely praised, but several details of the incident remain under investigation.
The co-pilot's motive, the full sequence of events inside the cockpit and the identities of everyone who intervened have not all been established publicly. Early contradictory reports about the pilots' nationalities have also demonstrated how quickly unverified information can spread during a major breaking-news event.
What is established is that a Flydubai flight carrying 174 people was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a violent cockpit incident, Machchhar was seriously injured, passengers and crew intervened, and the aircraft landed safely.
