The White House sent Congress a letter on Friday saying hostilities with Iran have "terminated" even as troops remain in the region and uncertainty about the state of the ceasefire.
The message seeks to prevent the White House from seeking congressional approval to continue the war. May 1 was the legal deadline to gain such approval in an armed conflict. Republican lawmakers were also set to let the deadline pass unchallenged, deferring to the president on the move.
