President Donald Trump is starting to send $500 checks to nearly 1 million Americans who bought health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s federal marketplace. The Treasury Department payments are going to more than 950,000 people across 30 states, according to an administration official cited by USA TODAY. Recipients are also receiving letters signed by Trump explaining why the money is being returned.
The payment has a specific target. It is not a new benefit for everyone with an Obamacare plan. The administration says the checks are meant for people who paid the full cost of their ACA coverage without receiving premium assistance and who lived in states using the federal exchange.
