Tropical Storm Alex remnants to sweep Scotland bringing heavy wind and rain this weekend

Scotland is set to be battered by heavy winds and frequent showers over the next couple of days, according to forecasters.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Alex, which caused flash flooding in Cuba and Florida, will descend over the north western part of the UK on Friday and Saturday.

Met Office forecasters say the weather system will transfer into a more typical low pressure system at that point.

This will bring winds as high as 55mph to some of the most exposed parts Scotland and thundery downpours.

Met Office forecasters have not issued a yellow weather warning for any part of Scotland so far.

Experts say the adverse conditions will ease up from Sunday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “Although no longer a named storm, the remnants of Ex-Tropical Storm Alex will bring some unseasonably strong winds across the northern half of the UK – especially to the northwest on Friday and Saturday.

“The track of the low-pressure system currently looks to be off the northwest coast of the UK on Friday and Saturday and winds are likely to reach around 45mph for some parts of the north of the UK, with a chance of some gusts in excess of 55mph in some exposed northwestern island and coastal areas.”

Last month, the Met Office published details of its three-month weather outlook.

Forecasters claimed the chances of it being a hot summer in the UK are higher than usual this year.

It was also suggested the impacts from heatwaves are more likely over the next three months - particularly in June and July.

But they warned spells of wet weather could once again bring thunderstorms and heavy showers - similar to the downpours many Scots experienced last summer.
