Three new eateries in Ayr are offering customers a slice of Europe with their fresh and authentic recipes.
Italian restaurant Aldente on Prestwick Road; Greek takeaway Gyros and new dessert parlour Whipp & Waffle, both on Ayr’s Sandgate, are all receiving rave reviews – keeping locals going back for more.
Authentic Italian dishes are what Aldente do best, providing pizzas – including the ever-controversial Hawaiian of ham and pineapple – and classic pastas, such as lasagne and carbonara.
However, if pizza or pasta doesn’t take your fancy, perhaps risotto, the mixed fish grill or braised Scottish lamb with polenta could be the dish for you.
Aldente also boast a vegetarian menu and desserts, including a classic tiramisu, panna cotta or Italian meringue.
Meanwhile, Ayr’s new Greek takeaway Gyros has foodies craving a bit of the Mediterranean.
The Greek food item gyros which the takeaway is named after – a classic Greek meal of seasoned meat served in a pita bread with salad – is, of course, on the menu, joining souvlakis, burgers and fresh homemade hummus and tzatziki.
Gyros are fast becoming popular with their ‘special Greek boxes’ – which allow you to try a little bit of everything.
Their ‘special box 1’ includes chicken gyros, lamb souvlaki, chicken souvlaki, bifteki, chips, salad, hummus, tzatziki and pitta bread.
And to finish off with something sweet is the classic syrup-soaked layered pastry that is baklava.
But if that doesn’t quite satisfy your sweet tooth craving, then perhaps a moreish dessert from Whipp & Waffle, a mere minute’s walk away, will indulge you.
Whipp & Waffle, who have taken over the unit where newsagent Sandgate News occupied for 80 years, serve up just what they say on the tin – freshly-made waffles.
Create your own ‘waffle tub’ by adding ice creams, sauces and treats of your choice to your doughy delight.
Also on the menu are churros, cookie doughs, milkshakes, sundaes and ice-cream cones.
