Tributes to 'larger than life character' killed after being hit by car on his bike

The 30-year-old man who was killed on his bike after he was hit by a car has been described by his family as a "larger than life character" who loved Swiss roll cake.

Keiron Smith, from Wrexham, was riding along the A541 Mold Road at Gwersyllt, Wrexham, when he was hit by the driver of a white Fiat 500 on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services attended the scene of the collision which happened shortly after 4pm. Keiron - who was known by his nickname 'Pidge' - was described as taking "every day as it came".

His heartbroken family said: "He would talk to everybody he would pass on the streets. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and loved his music as well as a couple of cans of beer. Despite his lifestyle he always had good intentions and meant well, and would always do what he could for people.

"Pidge was a dependant character from a young age and when he would get pocket money as a young child he'd often take himself off to the local supermarket to buy the cheapest Swiss roll cake - whether it be a chocolate or jam sponge.

"As a family and all of his friends, we are left with so many memories and he will always live on in our hearts and minds. This truly breaks us, and it doesn’t seem right."

They added: "Mum will always love and miss you. I will miss your voice and cheeky smile. You made me laugh so much; life will never be the same again. Fly high my son, until we meet again xxx Rest in peace."

North Wales Police has appealed for information about the incident. Sergeant Nicola Laurie of the Roads Policing Unit said: "Our thoughts remain with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“I would like to thank all those who have contacted us so far, however we are urging anybody who may have witnessed the collision, or who may have seen the cyclist prior to the collision to come forward. Upon reviewing CCTV in the area, we have identified a silver taxi and a Blue Renault Modus that were all seen driving along Old Mold Road and may have seen the cyclist moments before the collision occurred, between 3:45 and 4:05.

“We also know that a number of people stopped at the scene, we are also urging those to come forward."

Keiron's family thanked people for their kind messages and calls and also thanked those who helped at the roadside as well as the Welsh Ambulance Service and Wales Air Ambulance.

Anybody who may have witnessed the collision or who may have information should contact North Wales Police via the live web chat or by calling 101 and quoting reference number 23000187025.
