Many have taken to social media to pay tribute to Denis for his kind personality and the impact he had through his teaching and radio work.

Dunluce School, where Denis was Head of English, said: "It is with deep sadness that Dunluce School has learned of the sudden passing of our former Head of English - Mr Denis McNeill.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Helen and the wider family circle."

Former colleagues have said that they are shocked and saddened to learn of Denis' passing and that he was a "gentleman" and a pleasure to work with.

An "ambassador for the North Coast" organisations from across the North Coast have thanked him for the help he provided over the years and his willingness to promote the area.

Ballywillan Drama Group from Portrush said: "Ballywillan Drama Group is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Denis McNeill.

"Denis was a former member of the group and directed several of our pantomimes. He remained a huge supporter of ours in recent years, always helping us to promote our shows through his various media channels.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

Causeway Sea Tours said: "Causeway Sea Tours would like to extend our condolences to Helen and the wider McNeill family after the sad passing of one of our loyal customers Denis .

"Denis was a larger than life character who was always up for a bit of craic, even if it was tricking one of our skippers into believing he was an American tourist visiting the area for the first time. He was a true family man who adored his grand children who accompanied him on a couple of trips last summer.

"Our thoughts go out to all his family at this difficult time."

Funeral arrangements for Denis will be revealed later and have asked for family flowers only and for people to make donations to NI Kidney Research if they wish.
