Tributes pour in for talented Irish footballer and 'genuine' friend Sean Brogan, 20, after tragic fall from wall in Croatia

The community of Rathcoole, Co Dublin, have been left "utterly heartbroken" after the tragic death of 20-year-old Sean Brogan.

Sean sadly passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning after he fell from a wall in Queen Jelena Madijevka Gardens in Zadar, Croatia.

It is understood that he had been playing the guitar whilst sitting on a rampart wall in the historic park before the fall.

Sean's local football club have paid tribute to the young man who they described as "one of the most genuine men we knew".

In a statement on Facebook, Rathcoole FC said: "Rathcoole FC Senior team received the heartbreaking news yesterday that player Sean Brogan passed suddenly.

"It is with utter heartbreak that I send this message. Sean was a much loved member of Rathcoole FC since the age of 8 and had stayed with the club throughout to the senior team.

"Sean was one of our best players but most of all he was a friend and one of the most genuine men we knew.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul his father, who is also a key figure on coaching the senior team, his wife Una and their daughter Jessie on the passing of Sean.

"May his gentle soul rest in peace."

Local newspaper, IndexHR, reported that officers from the Zadar police department were called to the scene at around 4.45am on Thursday, where they discovered Sean's body.

An autopsy is being carried out to determine the exact cause of death.

A rampart is a defensive wall of a castle or walled city, with a broad top, a walkway, and typically a stone parapet.

In response to the Irish Mirror, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it was "aware of the case and is providing consular assistance."

According to IndexHR, the Mayor of Zadar, Branko Dukić, expressed his condolences to Sean's family in Ireland.

He said: "I was shocked by this news, thousands of children, adults and elderly people pass through our ramparts every day, and they do so without danger and in complete freedom. Unfortunately, accidents happen."

The paper also reports that three people have died in the same area in recent times, including a Dutch tourist in 2018 in a suspected fall from the ramparts.

When questioned about the safety of the ramparts in the area, the Mayor said they are "under the protection of UNESCO, which is why the procedure for installing protective fences is strictly prescribed."
