Tributes pour in for former RTE political correspondent Liam Cahill following sudden death

Tributes have poured in following the sudden death of former RTE political correspondent Liam Cahill.

Mr Cahill worked for RTE for a number of years, reporting on economics and politics.

He went on to write several books, including Forgotten Revolution: The Limerick Soviet 1919 , published in 1990 and a follow-up released in 2019, as well as From Suir to Jarama , his most recent book, which was published just last year.

A funeral notice on RIP.ie reads: "Pre-deceased by his beloved wife Patricia. Deeply regretted by his daughter Susan and son Eoin, together with his sister May and his entire extended family."

Former colleagues and friends have paid emotional tributes to Mr Cahill online.

The Ambassador of Ireland to the United States, Daniel Mulhall, said he was very sad to hear of Mr Cahill's passing.

"He was a few years ahead of me at school," he wrote.

"I later knew him as an RTÉ journalist, a political adviser, media professional, historian & Gaelic Games enthusiast. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

Taking to Twitter, Gavan Reilly extended his sympathies to Mr Cahill's family, saying: "Sorry to hear of sudden death of Liam Cahill ( @LiamCahill2013 ) - a man who packed a lot in. Former RTE political correspondent; later press officer across the political spectrum, and author of several historical books as well as publisher of popular GAA website 'An Fear Rua'. RIP"

RTE crime correspondent Paul Cunningham said: "A great colleague Liam Cahill has died suddenly. He was @rtenews Economic and later Political Correspondent. An author, he wrote "Forgotten Revolution: The Limerick Soviet 1919." Always generous with his time. Always something interesting to say. Condolences to his family".

Dermot Keyes said: "More sad news this evening. Liam Cahill was a gentleman and a trusted colleague to so many down through the years. Condolences to his family and those who knew and loved him best. RIP."

While Duncan Smith TD commented: "I'm so sad to learn of the passing of Liam Cahill. As an advisor to @labour, he separated himself from others who had a haughty disdain for staff/members, by being always available, responsive and interested. A real Labour person. A good man. May he rest in peace."
