Tributes pour in as Dublin-based woman killed in collision named locally

A woman who died after being hit by a car following her uncle's funeral has been named locally as Gobnait Twomey.

Gobnait, who lived in Dublin, was visiting her home village of Ballingeary, Co Cork on Monday when the incident happened. She was attending her uncle Willie's funeral following his death last Friday.

Gobnait, aged in her 50s, was walking home with two other women at around 1.10am after a gathering at a pub with her family when she was struck by a car, Cork Beo reports. She was pronounced dead at the scene while the other two women, aged 40s, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A man in his 40s was arrested and is being currently detained at Bandon Garda Station. Gobnait had recently graduated from UCD with a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy.

She had been working as a caregiver. Gobnait's family is well-known in the area and is heavily involved in local GAA.

The community has been rocked by the sudden death with local Cllr Martin Coughlan describing it as a "pure tragedy". He said: "It's very hard on the family particularly with it being so close to Christmas. I would offer my condolences to the family."

Local Councillor Gobnait Moynihan told CorkBeo: "The community in Ballingeary are in a state of shock, with the news getting out this morning of a terrible accident that hit a local family who had already buried somebody just hours before.

The scene remained closed off through Tuesday, while gardai have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed what happened to come forward.
