Tributes are being paid to an "inspiring, courageous and loveable" young father-of-one from Mayo who died this week after a long illness.
Jason Corrigan, 29, from Swinford and formerly of Charlestown, passed away peacefully on Friday after a 'bravely fought' battle with motor neurone disease.
People have been extending their condolences to his family including his partner, Rachel, with whom he shares their young daughter Myla.
Jason was described as a 'lovable' young man and has been remembered for his inspirational attitude towards his diagnosis after he was diagnosed in August 2018.
He was also a talented soccer player and played for Charlestown Athletic Football Club for many years though he "fought his toughest battle off the pitch".
Watch Your Back MND paid tribute to the Mayo man in a Facebook post, writing: "It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of our dear friend and fellow MND warrior, Jason Corrigan. An inspiring, courageous and loveable young man whom we had the privilege of becoming friends with over recent years.
"From the night we first met at the IMNDA conference, we were so inspired by this incredible young man, battling MND at such a young age. One of our campaign highlights, as most know, was our interview on The Ray D’Arcy TV show back in 2019. Having Jason in the front row with his partner Rachel and dad Pat meant the absolute world to us. We’ll never forget it.
"Jason, thank you for the inspiration you gave to us to keep campaigning to raise awareness and funds for MND research. This is a cruel, cruel disease and we’ll keep flying the flag for you and all those affected by MND. Our deepest condolences to Rachel, Myla, Bernie, Pat and all of Jason’s family and friends. RIP, a true hero, Jason."
The League Management Committee of the Mayo Football League also expressed their condolences to Jason's family and football club on his passing.
They wrote: "Jason played for his local club for many years and bravely fought his toughest battle off the pitch in the last few years with Motor Neurone Disease.
"Jason’s father Pat has been heavily involved in the game with Charlestown Athletic while his brother Michael plays with Killala FC and as a mark of respect the games involving Killala A and B sides have been postponed this weekend.
"May his gentle soul rest in peace."
His funeral mass was held on Sunday at 1pm in St James’s Church, Charlestown, and the burial took place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
