Tributes paid to former Glasgow councillor who was 'strong champion' for Govan

Tributes have been paid to a former Labour councillor for Govan following his death.

Glasgow’s Labour group announced that John Kane, 75 — a “strong champion” for his ward — has passed away.

Mr Kane represented Govan from his by-election victory in 2013 until he stood down ahead of the council elections in May 2022.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said: “Very sad to learn of the death of former Labour councillor John Kane.

“John was a warm and committed man, who was dedicated to improving the lives of Glaswegians. He will be sorely missed.”

The city’s Labour group said it was “deeply saddened to announce that our comrade and former colleague, Cllr John Kane, has passed away”.

“John was a strong champion for the people of Govan and deeply loved the role of councillor. Many across the Govan ward will have fond memories of John and all his work he has done for the community.

“Our thoughts are with John’s friends, family and all those who knew and loved him.”

Cllr Jill Brown, Labour, said: “So sad to hear John has passed away. He was so kind and thoughtful to me when I started out.

“Taking the time to explain processes and procedures, answer my many questions — a true gentleman. My thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Cllr Dan Hutchison, Greens, who represents Govan, said Mr Kane was “greatly appreciated and respected across our community and his passing is a great loss”.

Cllr Alex Wilson, SNP, who chairs the licensing committee, said: "John was my vice chair of licensing during the last term and his experience was invaluable.

"Above all he was such a kind and nice man who cared deeply about his ward."

And Cllr Thomas Kerr, Conservative, said: "John was a real stalwart of Glasgow politics and dedicated to the Govan ward. Thoughts are with my Labour colleagues and his family at this very sad time."
