Tributes paid to 'amazing' Scots wild swimmer who drowned at East Lothian beauty spot

A keen wild swimmer who tragically drowned at a Scots beauty spot on Sunday has been described as a kind and generous man by heartbroken friends.

Douglas Meiklejohn has been named locally as the man who died at popular Tyninghame Beach in East Lothian on Sunday, September 18, Edinburgh Live reports. The 51-year-old, from Edinburgh, was wild swimming when he got into difficultly in the water.

Emergency services, supported by the RNLI and local coastguard, rushed to the scene but sadly Douglas could not be saved and was pronounced dead.

Close friends of the swimmer paid tribute to him online as they remembered his love for open water swimming and said he was "so full of life".

David Reilly reflected: "I don't usually post things like this but today I am absolutely heart broken to report the death of this amazing person Douglas Meiklejohn.

"Douglas was one of the kindest most generous people I have met and he helped me a lot get into wild swimming. He was caring and just a lovely person. He was swimming at Tyninghame Beach on Sunday, got into difficulty, and didn't make it back. Sleep well my trusted friend."

Dominic Berry said: “What absolutely dreadful news. A good, decent, kind and generous man, taken long before his time. I am so very sorry.”

Jennifer Lang added: “So sad, a great friend and neighbour. You will be missed.”

Jonathan Hutchinson said: “It is such a shock to hear that Dougie has died. So sad. He was so full of life and loved his open water swimming. Taken far too young. RIP Dougie.”

While Carol Raeburn added: “So sorry to hear this, I'm still shocked I worked beside Douglas; he was such a nice man.”

Local police confirmed that Douglas Meiklejohn was the 51-year-old who drowned at Tyninghame beach on Sunday September 18 after getting into difficulties in the water.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "A 51-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty in the water at a beach in Tyninghame, East Linton on Sunday, 18 September.

"Police and emergency services, supported by the RNLI and local coastguard, attended, however, the man died at the scene.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
