Tributes paid after tragic death of young Irish sportsman remembered as 'true gentleman in every way'

Tributes are pouring in for a young man and popular sportsman after his tragic death.

John Devitt, from Ardee in Co Louth, passed away on Sunday.

Football and rugby clubs across the county have been paying tribute to John, especially his teammates at John Mitchels GFC and Ardee Rugby Club.

Extending their condolences to his family online, John Mitchels GFC said: "After the very very sad bereavement of John, it's very hard to express the club's feelings at this time. We can only offer our thoughts, prayers, condolences and love to the Devitt Family and to all his teammates and friends. John was a very popular member of our club and will be dearly missed by all."

Ardee Rugby Club added: "It's with huge sadness that we make this post today. RIP John, a wonderful rugby player and a fantastic person. You will be hugely missed by all who were lucky enough to meet and get to know you."

Other sports clubs also led tributes, with Glyde Rangers GFC saying: "Glyde Rangers offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of John Devitt at this sad time and to all his teammates at John Mitchels Gfc & Ardee Rugby Club. RIP John."

Naomh Malachi GFC said: "Naomh Malachi extends condolences to the family and friends of John Mitchell’s player John Devitt. Rest In Peace."

Louth GAA added: "Louth GAA would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of John Devitt at this sad time and to all his teammates at John Mitchels GFC. Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam."

Hunterstown Rovers GFC also paid tribute, writing: "Hunterstown Rovers would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, team mates and all at John Mitchels GFC Club on the very sad and untimely passing of John Devitt. Ar Dheis Dé Go Raibh A Anam."

While Ardee St Marys said: "We would like to send our deepest condolences to our sporting neighbours Ardee Rugby Club and John Mitchels Gfc on the passing of player John Devitt.

"We are keeping his family, friends, team mates and the community in our prayers during this very difficult time. May John Rest In Peace."

And Stabannon Parnells GFC wrote: "Stabannon Parnells GFC would like to extend our sympathies to the family of John Devitt after his sudden passing. We also extend condolences to his many friends, as well as his club mates in John Mitchels GFC and Ardee RFC. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal."

Friends and neighbours have also been paying tribute, with John described as "a lovely gentleman" and a "great young lad".

Others said he was "a true gentleman in every way" who will be "sorely missed" by all who knew him.

He will be laid to rest on Wednesday morning following a funeral Mass at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in Ardee at 12pm.
