Tributes have been left at the scene where an 11-year-old boy tragically died after being hit by a bus in South Tyneside.

The boy had been riding his bicycle on Lizard Lane, Whitburn, at around 3.30pm yesterday (October 25) when he was involved in a collision with a bus. Emergency services were called but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Northumbria Police say formal identification is still to take place but the boy’s family is being supported by specialist officers and have requested privacy at this time.

Lizard Lane was shut for several hours while officers spoke with the bus driver, who remained at the scene, and carried out inquiries with a number of witnesses.

Inspector Phil Patterson, of Northumbria Police, said: “This collision has had devastating consequences for all involved, and our thoughts are with the boy’s family at this incredibly difficult time.

“We are working hard to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the collision and have spoken with a number of witnesses already to help us build up that picture. We are now asking for anyone else who saw what happened or who may have dashcam from the area to get in touch and assist us.”

Anyone with dashcam footage of the incident or who believes they have information that could assist with the investigation, should contact Northumbria Police via its website, quoting log NP-20221025-0586.
