Tributes for the "wonderful husband, dad and grandad" have been pouring in as news of his death spread.

Kilmainham Tales' Facebook page wrote: "It is with our saddest hearts that we share the news of Dad’s death. A wonderful husband, Dad and Grandad, our hearts are broken. Kilmainham Tales was Dad’s passion and we thank all his friends who supported and put their trust in him to share the importance and significance of Anne Devlin and Irish history. We hope you all will continue this in his memory.

Historian Donal Fallon wrote on Twitter: "I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Micheal O Doibhilin, publisher of the Kilmainham Tales series, and the great keeper of the flame of the Anne Devlin story. Micheal was a guide for many years in Kilmainham, who knew every inch of the prison and its story. He will be so missed."

Warren Farrell said: "Extremely sad news to hear today! Michael O DoibhilIn, writer, historian, tour guide with a passion for telling those stories who had been forgotten or on the fringes. Ever present in Glasnevin cemetery in researching Anne Devlin’s story & the forgotten members of the Invincibles."

Gerard Shannon said: "I am heartbroken at the passing of Micheal O Doibhilin."

The Irish People Podcast wrote: "We are incredibly sad to hear of the death of Micheal O Doibhilin. Micheal took part in a podcast with us on Anne Devlin and we were due to complete another episode on the Invincibles. Micheal was a wonderful historian, & author, an incredibly knowledgeable & helpful man."

A notice on RIP.ie stated that Micheal passed "peacefully surrounded by his family in the care of the staff in ICU at the Hermitage Clinic. Beloved husband of Milla and dear father of Aisling, Jenny, Neasa and the late Aoife and Niamh, devoted grandfather to his five grandsons Cian, Henry, Luke, Emmet and Will and brother of Caitriona and the late Maire.

"He will be sadly missed and remembered by his loving family, sons-in-law Paul, Dave and Colm, cousins Kevin and Susie, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and his many friends."

The funeral mass will take place on Thursday at 10am at St Mary's Church in Lucan followed by a burial in Esker Cemeter in Lucan.
