Tribute march organised in memory of Urantsetseg Tserendorj to complete 'walk she never finished'

A tribute march has been organised in memory of Urantsetseg Tserendorj to complete the 'walk she never finished'.

The mother-of-two died last year after she was attacked at the CHQ building on her way to work.

Her life support machine was turned off on February 3, 2021, with family members flying in from Mongolia to say a final goodbye.

Her family were unable to hold an event due to Covid restrictions in place at the time.

An anniversary mass was held in St Kevin's Church in Dublin 8 last Sunday and, now, a year after her death, Urantsetseg's family will complete a walk she never got to finish on Thursday.

Green Party Councillors Hazel Chu and Janet Horner, along with the National Women's Council, are helping to organise the event.

Cllr Chu told Dublin Live: “The Women’s Council is involved, but it’s mainly her family.

"Her family came to me and Janet Horner, and asked if the National Women’s Council could get involved as well because they’ve been so good with these issues and they’ve been so helpful.

“I met her family at Mass just over a week ago and they told me that they wanted to do the walk that she couldn’t finish.

"They didn’t get to do it last year, we wanted to commemorate, we wanted to do different things but the only thing we could do was to light a candle at the Mansion House.

“The family also had small vigils but I think they wanted for her to be remembered by others but they couldn’t do anything because of the lockdown.

"But now that it’s more appropriate, they’re asking if people would like to join them on a walk."

Cllr Chu believes that the walk will hopefully demonstrate the community's strength in the face of violence against women in Ireland.

And she is encouraging as many people as possible in the area, especially men, to take part.

She said: “We’ve seen today that there was a young woman that was brutally assaulted, and the other day there was a 17-year-old assaulted in Kilkenny.

“There’s a lot of these incidents that happen and don’t get reported, but now it’s getting more attention and it brings attention to the problem that women have to live with this everyday.

Dublin Lord Mayor Hazel Chu (@hazelchu Twitter)

"They worry when they walk home in the dark. And they really shouldn’t.

“This will highlight that the streets in our areas as well, they belong to women too. It will also show solidarity there. A lot of women tell me that they rather not walk home at a certain time. Some women are worried for their safety in the dark, I get that.

“But we need to show that we can’t be told that you shouldn’t go out at a certain hour because if you look at what happened in Tullamore, it was 4 o’clock. Kilkenny happened at 12 o’clock in the day.

"It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s night or day, it seems that if you’re a woman you’ll get targeted.

“We shouldn’t have to deal with that. It’s not up to us at this stage, it’s up to the many, many men.

"People say it’s not all men, well great, if it’s not all men, come out and show your solidarity and do something about it.

“It’d be great for people to come along and show solidarity. It’d be great for the family to see the support. It’d be great to see a lot of men there if possible and whoever would like to come.

“A life was lost and it doesn’t matter where you come from or how it happened, but it shouldn’t happen and it shouldn’t continue to happen.”
