The trial of a Las Vegas-area politician accused of killing an investigative reporter who wrote critical articles is set to begin in Nevada. Jury selection is scheduled to start in a case that has shocked both Sin City and the journalism world.

The victim, a respected journalist with 44 years of experience, was found slashed and stabbed to death outside his home. The accused public official is alleged to have had a motive related to articles written by the journalist about him and a county office in turmoil.

The accused, a former lawyer and unsuccessful political candidate, has pleaded not guilty to open murder charges and could face life in prison if convicted. He has remained in custody while awaiting trial.

More than 100 prospective jurors have been questioned about their knowledge of the case. The trial is expected to last less than two weeks, with prosecutors not seeking the death penalty.

The defense has raised concerns about the legality of the accused's detention, the deletion of crucial evidence, and the handling of blood tests taken after his arrest. The judge will hear final arguments before proceeding with the trial.

The victim's family has chosen not to comment on the trial. Prosecutors claim to have strong evidence linking the accused to the crime, including DNA evidence and physical items found at his residence.

The trial has faced delays due to legal battles over the protection of journalistic sources and other procedural issues. The case has drawn attention to the safety of journalists in the U.S. and the importance of press freedom in holding public officials accountable.

While journalist killings are rare in the U.S., the incident has highlighted the risks faced by reporters in their line of work. Advocates emphasize the need for journalists to be able to carry out their duties without fear of violence or intimidation.
