Trent Alexander-Arnold fires Liverpool warning to overtake Newcastle United with Man United win

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has claimed that his side "will need results to go their way" to qualify for the Champions League next season, as they look to overtake Newcastle United with a win against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Eddie Howe's side travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City for Saturday's early kick-off. Should the Magpies lose, Liverpool will have the chance to leapfrog them in the table with a win against Man United on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle would be able to reclaim their spot ahead of the Reds by winning their game in hand, yet Alexander-Arnold has called on his side to start mounting as serious push for the top-four despite their need for other results to go their way.

"We're stringing results together and we're playing some good football as well," the Liverpool defender told Sky Sports News.

"We're getting the wins on the board especially at this time of the season, and we need to be pushing as far as we can. We're on the right path but we need to carry on.

"As a team, we understand it's not in our hands," he added. "We need results to go our way but there's still a long way to go and we have a lot of games to play, a lot can happen.

"It's important for us to get points on the board and that's where our heads are at, come April and May, that's when we know we'll stand but for now we have to make sure we're in a good position to push on.

"Three points against a team like [Manchester] United on Sunday will really help us in achieving that."
