Far from being just a festive trend, metallics were spotted on the runway as early as last spring. From Gucci and Versace through to Chanel, silver was a theme that dominated, with Isabel Marant showing highly polished trousers that prompted fashion editors to declare the look a key trend. Fast forward to autumn/winter and the high street has caught up. Silver, the colour of the season, feels fresh after seasons of saturated brights.
The key is how you wear this magpie-attracting trend without looking like a disco ball. First up, silver trousers – already sold out at M&S and Cos. For ageless appeal, style with simple separates, like a crisp white T-shirt and a tailored coat. Alternatively, layer a white shirt over a black rollneck and add heels for an evening out, or a slouchy black sweater for daywear. Try Mango (£49.99) or River island (£45) for faux leather options, or Mint Velvet for real leather. Hush’s pleated skirt (5) is a brilliant alternative. Style it for work with grey knitwear and knee- high boots or for the evening with a vest top, blazer and ballet flats.
If you are still not convinced, try accessories instead. Silver shoes are seasonless, bringing pizzazz to any outfit from old jeans through to black velvet. Cos does a chunky beaded necklace (£49), which is an instant update to the tuxedo look, and Kaai’s wrist pouch (3) is perfect for the party season. Dune’s jaw-dropping boots (6), meanwhile, are all you need to revitalise your favourite LBD.
