Two Bristol restaurants have been shortlisted for gongs in the Trencherman's Awards 2023. Ronnie's of Thornbury and Thornbury Castle are in the running for awards.
The Trencherman’s Guide was launched in 1993 as the guide to the very best eating experiences in the South West. It has built a reputation as a solid source of great dining destinations.
Ronnie's of Thornbury, on St Mary Street, serves up modern British cooking in an intimate setting. Located in a characterful 17th-century building, it has become a reliable gourmet go-to for Thornbury’s discerning diners, and has been shortlisted for Best Trencherman’s Restaurant.

Thornbury Castle, on Castle Street, is a unique staycation destination and was once owned by Henry VIII. It serves up refined and classic European dishes, and has been shortlisted for Best Newcomer.
A statement from Trencherman's reads: "Trencherman’s readers and food lovers across the South West came out in force to support their favourite restaurants, hotels, pubs, chefs and front of house teams in the Trencherman’s Awards 2023. More than 30,000 individual votes were cast in the second round of voting, with some of the closest final scores we’ve seen in the awards’ ten-year history."
The winners will be crowned at a swanky Trencherman's Awards ceremony on March 6. Awards will be dished out at Salcombe Harbour Hotel in Devon.
Celebrity chef Rick Stein has described the Trencherman's Guide as "a guide with teeth". It is the result of strict entry criteria which restaurants must meet in order to be included.
A statement from Trencherman's explains: "Establishments can’t buy their way into the guide: they’re invited to be a members based on reaching a number of points in the scoring system (based on Good Food Guide, AA and Michelin ratings) or by having been visited and scored on a long list of criteria by an experienced food writer from the Trencherman’s team. The guide is overseen by a committee of industry experts chaired by leading chef Michael Caines MBE."
