Treetop Adventure Golf to swing into the Metrocentre this summer

A jungle themed mini golf leisure venue is set to open in the North East this summer.

Treetop Adventure Golf has announced that it will be opening its fifth UK destination at the Metrocentre in Gateshead this Summer. The immersive game company is investing around £2.5m into the site, creating two 18-hole indoor courses to choose from, as well as a bonus 19th hole – offering all guests the chance to win a free round. The new attraction will replace the Angry Birds Golf site, bringing a new concept to the centre.

The company, which also has mini golf experiences in Leicester, Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff, will also create more than 20 jobs through the opening. The huge leisure destination invites visitors to dodge ancient spirits and wildlife on the mini golf tours, before visiting The Market, where it will serve up cocktails and mocktails in The Thirsty Toucan, and coffees at the Jungle Buzz Café, both of which will tap into local suppliers. There will also be free lockers and a free photobooth where guests can get souvenir pictures from their jungle trip.

Elizabeth Stanway, CEO and co-founder of Treetop Adventure Golf said: “We’re really excited to bring our extraordinary and immersive world to life at Metrocentre. We believe everyone should have access to wonder and play in their lives.

"Everyone’s welcome at Treetop - we create joyful places, that bring people together and where everyone can be themselves. We can’t wait for our guests to start making treasured memories together at Metrocentre."

Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, senior asset manager for Metrocentre, said: “We are excited to welcome Treetop Adventure Golf to Metrocentre later this year. Their substantial investment into the site will offer our visitors a completely new and immersive mini golf experience, which will appeal to a broad range of ages. The mix of leisure, dining and retail is a key component to the success of Metrocentre so it’s important that we continue to invest and refresh our offer.”

The news follows on from the announcement that luxury homeware and interior firm Rowen Homes, launched by Pink Boutique founder Alice Hall, is set to open its first store at the Metrocentre following significant growth online. The new store is expected to open its doors in April, moving into the former Laura Ashley unit, featuring the brand’s luxury furniture and homeware, allowing customers to meet the team through workshops, talks and events.

Last week the Metrocentre also announced that a £20m NHS health centre will open behind the Harrod’s beauty store in the mall, allowing mall visitors to have scans and tests done at the shopping complex.

Mr Cox added: “Delivering alternative anchor uses is an integral part of the asset strategy for Metrocentre, diversifying the reasons to visit and creating additional footfall and jobs. The repurposing of substantial retail floor space will signify another key milestone in the evolution of Metrocentre.”
