Travelodge's plans to open new hotel in Hexham are just weeks away

Travelodge will be opening six new hotels this year - including a brand new development in Hexham.

The firm has announced the plans, reported by WalesOnline - representing an investment of hundreds of millions of pounds and which should result in hundreds of jobs around the country - alongside schemes which will begin construction in 2023. Along with Hexham, there are plans for four new hotels in London (in the Docklands, Lewisham, Peckham and Wimbledon), along with one in Braintree in Essex.

The Hexham venue will, according to the Travelodge website, be bookable from June 20, with the firm putting the final touches to the new development. It has been build on the old Hexham bunker as part of a huge transformation - which will also include a Lidl.

Steve Bennett, Travelodge's chief property and development officer said: "2022 marks an important milestone in the evolution of Travelodge, as we launch our new premium look and feel budget-luxe Travelodge design hotels and expand our estate with new hotels and in-house restaurants.

"We are seeking to continue this expansion with plans for more than 75 new Travelodge hotels throughout the UK over the next five years, which will create around 2,000 new jobs. As we look to the future, the long-term prospects for low-cost hotels remain strong. Britain has become a nation of value conscious travellers, with more of us choosing to stay in budget hotels than any other hotel type, supporting our plans to expand our hotel network.

"It is also an interesting time for the property sector as the Covid pandemic has accelerated major change and opened opportunities for us to take Travelodge to new locations."

Construction firm Esh won a £10m contract to complete the work to redevelop Hexham Bunker back in 2021. The new Travelodge hotel will feature the firm's so-called "budget-luxe" design and a bar cafe, along with 69 bedrooms..
