Travelodge customer requests that left staff speechless

Travelodge has revealed some of its most bizarre requests that customers have asked staff teams in Liverpool.

The budget hotel chain disclosed a list of requests from the nine hotels in Liverpool and said an influx of customers fuelled by the lifting of covid restrictions has resulted in more people visiting over 2021-2022.

This year's Travelodge audit revealed a growing trend of customers asking hotel teams in the north to record voice messages on their phones "because they love their regional accents". A bar and café supervisor at the Travelodge hotel on Liverpool Central Exchange Street was asked to record a customer's voicemail "in the voice of Cilla Black".

The customer said Cilla was "their favourite celebrity" before asking the team member to specifically say "surprise, surprise" - a reference to the long-running ITV show presented by the Merseybeat star.

Another request saw a customer ask a Travelodge member of staff at the hotel at Liverpool John Lennon Airport: "I've left my passport at home; can someone urgently go and collect it for me?"

A customer at the Liverpool Stonedale Park hotel asked: "Where is the best place to spot Bertie and Bella? My husband loves birds." Another at the same hotel questioned "how tarty is the Liverpool tart?"

Two separate customers in the Liverpool Docks Travelodge said: "What time does the Yellow Submarine depart?" and "where are the Liver Pools?" A staff member at Exchange Street was also asked "What time does Charles Dickens do the penny readings?"

Staff at the hotels' front desk were not the only ones to be met with bizarre demands as one chef in the Edge Lane Travelodge found out. They were asked by a customer "what are your thoughts about mac & cheese on pizza? Can you do this for me?"

Other queries that prompted bemused reactions from workers at the hotel chain included one customer asking "can someone carry my bags for me while I'm shopping at Liverpool One?" and another questioning "how do Scousers say hello?"

Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge spokeswoman said: “Following a very difficult two years, Britons have taken full advantage this year to enjoy everything they have missed during the pandemic and this includes holidays and business trips. We have experienced a significant increase in bookings across our 581 UK Travelodge hotels this year including our nine hotels in Liverpool, with Britons taking more short breaks and turning a concert or sporting event into a Minication.

"Also with more Britons holidaying on British shores than ever before our hotel teams have also received a high volume of interesting requests and questions especially around attractions, locations, local dishes, customs and traditions across our diverse British regions.

"Where possible, our hotel teams will go above and beyond to help customers as they relish a good challenge. However, there are some requests beyond their reach such as a guest requesting that a member of the hotel staff go to his home to collect a forgotten passport when he had a very early flight the next day.”
