Travel Writer sparks debate after asking locals to name Edinburgh's 'signature pub'

A travel writer has sparked a debate on Twitter about whether some of the UK's biggest cities have a single 'signature pub ', and there were more than a few suggestions for Edinburgh.

People flocked to comment on Simon Calder's Tweet which asked the question that included both Glasgow and Edinburgh before he offered his own picks for Belfast and London.

In the Tweet, which had over 800 comments, Simon asked: "UK cities: does each have a 'signature' pub? I want to visit them all. I’d argue: Belfast, Crown Liquor Saloon; London, George, Borough High Street. But Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, Nottingham, Norwich, Hull, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow?"

The Gin Clan was one of the first to respond, posting: "Edinburgh: Cafe royal ... but many other contenders. You really need to look at the different parts of the city but for cage [sic] royal works for city centre."

Writer @Ruaridhnicoll agreed with the Cafe Royal, while @Forster_Pete suggested the Guildford Arms.

Other suggestions included The Sheep Heid Inn and the famous Oxford Bar.

@FraserB said: "The Sheep’s Heid Inn in Edinburgh said to date back to the 14th century… last time I was there they also had the oldest skittle isle in the country."

While others suggested two of the city's much-loved bars.

If so, what would be your pick? (EL)

@AlanGrantUK posted: "For Edinburgh, it has to be the wonderful Athletic Arms (known to us as Diggers) in Gorgie. A tremendous boozer for a Sunday session or before/after a trip to Murrayfield."

@tomcallumreid agreed: "A bit out of the way, but I’m very partial to Diggers in Edinburgh and Cafe Royal in the centre is pretty iconic."

While @vickyinglis13 added: "I used to work in the Canny Man's in Edinburgh. Definitely, a contender for representing the city, though it would be up against stiff competition from Sandy Bell's or the Guildford Arms."

@CosthisisAfrica said: "Edinburgh has a lot of Free Houses that have a lot of character. Shout out to @CannyMans in Morningside - a one of a kind! Somewhere like Sandy Bell's or Captain's Bar also make a good a "signature" for their folk sessions"

@tamlatrees picked out one that we'd have expected to be spoken about much more: "Edinburgh, as you can imagine has many great pubs but I'd have the Bow Bar on the list. Fantastic original decor, ceiling, classic pub mirrors and generally very well-served beer. In the Old Town as well."

Did they miss any out? Which one would you have picked? Let us know below.
