Travel chaos on M62 as lanes closed and queues build after crashes

Multiple collisions took place on the M62 on Wednesday afternoon (April 13), causing miles of congestion and significant delays.

A crash between two cars between junctions 10 (Croft Interchange) and 11 (Birchwood Interchange) westbound led to approximately 4.5 miles of congestion at rush hour. National Highways stated on Twitter that it caused a 20 minute delay.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police told the ECHO : "At around 4.50pm on Wednesday 13 April a report was received of a collision involving a black Renault, a white Mercedes A Class and a black Range Rover Evoque on M62 between junction 11 to junction 10 westbound.

"There were no injuries reported. A lane closure was in place but has since been lifted." However, three miles of queues remained in the area around 6pm. It had cleared by 7pm.

The delays were also exacerbated by heavy traffic for Liverpool FC's Champions League match against Benfica.

An earlier incident had taken place between junctions 7 (Rainhill Stoops) and 8 (Burtonwood) westbound before 4pm, which a spokesperson for Merseyside Police stated was reportedly a collision between a car and a lorry. The incident closed part of the road, but it cleared by 4.30pm.

Elsewhere, emergency repairs to carriageway defects led to four mile queues on the M56 Westbound this afternoon. The repairs are taking place between Junction 12 (Runcorn) and Junction 14 (Chester Services). Travel time is currently 60 minutes and the works will likely remain in place overnight.
