Everton have re-signed Idrissa Gana Gueye for £2m from Paris Saint-Germain and bought James Garner from Manchester United in a deal worth up to £15.5m.
Gueye, who joined PSG for £30m in 2019 after three productive seasons at Goodison Park, agreed a return several weeks ago only for the terms of his release from the French champions, where the midfielder had 12 months on his contract, to delay the deal. The 32-year-old has now signed a two-year contract.
The Senegal international is eligible for Saturday’s Merseyside derby at home to Liverpool, as is Garner, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and has cost an initial £9m with £6.5m payable in add-ons. United are also entitled to 20% of the profit on any future sale. The 21-year-old has signed a four year contract.
As Gueye and Garner arrived at Everton, André Gomes departed, with the Portuguese midfielder joining Lille on a season’s loan.
Leeds’ hopes of signing the Senegal striker Bamba Dieng from Marseille were scuppered after the 22-year-old dramatically decided to join Nice as he prepared to fly to Leeds Bradford airport for a medical. It is understood that Dieng, part of the side that won the Africa Cup of Nations this year, had a change of heart after agreeing a move to Elland Road. He was due to sign a five-year contract at Nice in a deal worth €12m (£10.4m) and although the transfer appeared to collapse it could yet go through on Friday.
The Leeds chairman, Andrea Radrizzani, had tweeted “welcome Bamba Dieng” shortly before 2pm BST but less than six hours later he wrote: “Part of the madness of deadline day. We have been screwed up, it happens even to the best ones. We have done a great market, planned and executed our targets at very early stage.”
Leeds then moved for Zürich’s Willy Gnonto, an 18-year-old Italy forward, and signed him on a five-year deal.
Fulham have signed Willian on a one-year deal almost exactly 12 months after the Brazilian reached a mutual agreement with Arsenal to terminate his contract. “I’m happy to be here, I’m happy to be back in the Premier League,” said the 34-year-old. Marco Silva has also added the Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa on a season’s loan and Dan James, also on loan, from Leeds.
Blackburn rejected two bids from Fulham for the Chile striker Ben Brereton Díaz, who has also been the subject of interest from Everton. Fulham moved instead for Carlos Vinícius, who had a loan at Tottenham, and secured him from Benfica in an initial £4m transfer.
Nottingham Forest took their signings to 21 by bringing in Willy Boly from Wolves, Blackpool’s Josh Bowler – who was immediately loaned to Olympiakos – and the Rennes defender Loïc Badé. They were also pursuing the Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi, only for that to collapse, and are expected to sign the equivalent of two full teams by adding the the free agent Serge Aurier.
Southampton had a busy day, completing a loan move for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who can play at full-back or in midfield, signing the Croatia centre-back Duje Caleta-Car on a four-year contract from Marseille and bringing in two teenagers from Manchester City: the 19-year-old winger Sam Edozie for a fee that could rise to £10m and the 18-year-old defender Juan Larios for £6m.
Southampton also shifted players out. Jack Stephens left for Bournemouth on loan, Oriol Romeu made a permanent switch to Girona and Jan Bednarek went on loan to Aston Villa, who have signed the midfielder Leander Dendoncker from Wolves.
The West Ham defender Craig Dawson had been due to join Wolves for £5m until the London club failed to get their move for Bednarek over the line. After selling Dendoncker Wolves brought in the 21-year-old Malian midfielder Boubacar Traoré from Metz on loan.
Leicester made Wout Faes their first outfield signing in a £15m deal from Reims. The central defender, a Belgium international, described it as “a dream step”.
