10:40 , Tashan Deniran-AlleyneAs Fifa rules prohibit players from appearing for more than two sides in one season, Harvey Elliott finds himself in an awkward position.
Elliott joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan on Deadline Day in the summer, but has struggled for game time with his last appearance coming as a late substitute against Feyenoord in the Europa League on October 2.
As per the conditions of the loan agreement, the deal will be made permanent for £35million if he makes ten Premier League appearances for Villa.
So far, Elliott featured four times for Emery’s side in English football’s top-flight, though not since being replaced at half-time on his one and only start against former club Fulham at the end of September.
Emery has already revealed the club will not be taking up the option to trigger a permanent transfer for the attacking midfielder but Elliott cannot move to another club in January as he has already featured for Aston Villa and Liverpool - as a late substitute in the win over Newcastle back in August - this season.

The 31-year-old set-piece specialist - who is one direct free-kick goal away from equalling David Beckham’s all-time Premier League record - has been told he can leave the London Stadium as he is not in Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans.
Ward-Prowse is under contract with the Hammers until 2027 but hasn’t featured for the club under Nuno, who oversaw the premature end of the player’s loan at Nottingham Forest last season when he was at the Tricky Trees’ helm.
Meanwhile, the struggling Clarets are seeking a midfielder with top-flight experience after losing Josh Cullen to an ACL injury.

So too is Hayden Hackney of Middlesbrough, according to separate reports (see post at 11.20am GMT), and long-running targets from within the Premier League like Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton.
AC Milan’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is also supposedly being considered by Aston Villa after they lost Boubacar Kamara to injury, is another apparent option.

The 19-year-old Brazilian youth international, who is rumoured to be on the radar of Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti, is believed to be capable of making an immediate impact for the Cherries, with whom he will complete a medical later this week.
It is suggested Rayan will travel to formalise the move on Friday.

Wednesday 21 January 2026 15:20 , Alex DakersAston Villa Women head coach Natalia Arroyo could hand debuts to January arrivals Oriane Jean-Francois and Jenna Nishwonger this weekend when her side takes on Manchester United this weekend.
Jean-Francois is a club-record signing, brought in from Chelsea, while Nishwonger has arrived on loan from Arsenal.
"We were following Jenna for quite a long time,” Arroyo told Sky Sports.
“We need a left-footed player that could help us both in attack and defence and having more depth in our squad, so this specific defender dominating the left foot was important for us. The fact that she maybe needed us as well as a platform, that was a good combination to give her the trust again and give her a good environment to shine again.
Of Nishwonger, she added: "With Oriane, it's the same intention - bringing some depth to the squad, bringing some physicality. It's a very pure defensive profile but with really good qualities in possession, so she can do both.
"She can help us to give balance, she can help us to be consistent, to win duels. We are bringing the game sometimes to these physical battles, so we want our players in the central channel to be strong and she's a very good profile.
"She played an amazing Euros and again, we were following her and it was the opportunity to have her in the squad. We are expecting her to bring her quality, bring her ambition and help us to be stronger as a team."

There is no option for the La Liga side to buy him back, having only just sold Lopez to the Old Gold in the summer, while Wolves are also said to have been open to Championship loan offers this month.

Mateta latest: Villa interested in £35m Palace striker, could let Guessand move other way
Wednesday 21 January 2026 14:36 , Alex DakersAston Villa are interested in signing Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has informed Crystal Palace he wishes to leave this month, writes Dom Smith.
Mateta’s contract at Palace runs until June 2027. He turns 29 this summer and is eager to play in the Champions League.
Villa are keen on improving their options in attack and had been working on a move for Tammy Abraham from Besiktas but there have been no breakthroughs with that.
Standard Sport previously reported in August 2024 that Villa held an interest in Mateta. It went no further at that point and he remained at Palace where that season he went on to win the FA Cup under Oliver Glasner.
Mateta has been a target for a number of top European clubs in recent years due to his goalscoring record with Palace, whose impressive start to this season has stalled and they are now winless in ten matches.
Juventus had tried to sign Mateta earlier this month and the striker was keen on the move. However, a deal could not be reached as Juventus felt Palace’s valuation of the striker, believed to be in the region of £35million, was too high.
Mateta has scored ten goals in 32 appearances in all competitions for the Eagles this term.
Palace retain an interest in Villa’s Evann Guessand, who they expressed a keenness to sign in the summer before he joined the midlands club. He has not played regularly for Unai Emery’s side and that has alerted Palace to the Ivorian once more.
Glasner’s side have endured a tumultuous month, crashing out of the FA Cup as holders to sixth-tier Macclesfield, losing captain Marc Guehi who joined Manchester City, and with the head coach himself going public about his plan to leave the club in the summer.
Having also informed Palace of his desire to leave the club, Mateta - reportedly valued at around £35 million - has no plans to sign a new long-term deal.

Man Utd discuss Rashford return
Wednesday 21 January 2026 14:05 , Oli GentManchester United have held talks with Marcus Rashford over a potential return to the club.
Rashford left his boyhood side on loan for Barcelona in the summer after being frozen out by Ruben Amorim, but now, with the Portuguese no longer in charge at Old Trafford, Football Transfers suggest that there could be a way back for the winger.
He has a €35million buy option in his deal at Barca, although that price tag could be a stumbling block for the La Liga side, who are once again struggling financially.

Sterling eyeing Chelsea exit with Palace, Fulham among options
Wednesday 21 January 2026 13:15 , Alex DakersRaheem Sterling is aiming to leave Chelsea his month, having long been deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, with both Fulham and Crystal Palace among clubs to have enquired about the 31-year-old.
Sterling is also “appreciated” by Napoli, reports Mercato, but his lofty wages are said to be “beyond Serie A limits” unless Chelsea agree to cover part of his salary in a loan.

City considering exits for pair of academy products
Wednesday 21 January 2026 13:09 , Alex DakersPep Guardiola apparently wants Manchester City to sell Rico Lewis.
The home-grown full-back has played in several roles for City since breaking into the first-time but hasn’t looked up to the standard in some of his recent appearances, which Fichajes reports has led Guardiola to form the opinion that the club should look to cash in on him now.
City are reportedly aiming for a €35 million (£30.5m) fee for Lewis, who only turned 21 in November.
It comes amid continued speculation that fellow youngster Oscar Bobb, 22, could be on his way out of the Etihad this month.
The Norway international was already struggling for regular gametime this season, an issue exacerbated by the big-money arrival of positional rival Antoine Semenyo, and clubs including Fulham have shown an interest in his services.

Chelsea midfield shake-up?
Wednesday 21 January 2026 13:00 , Alex DakersRecent days have brought rumours of Real Madrid interest in Enzo Fernandez - and while Chelsea appear unlikely to let the highly-valued Argentine go, the Blues have reportedly identified a replacement should he be tempted away from Stamford Bridge.
That is one Joao Neves, according to Fichajes, who report that the Paris Saint-Germain star would likely command a fee even higher than that of Enzo, surely well in excess of £100 million.
Separately, transfer reporter Ben Jacobs says Chelsea are lining up a move for highly coveted Nottingham Forest midfielder and England international Elliot Anderson. That may not happen until the summer window, though, and they’re likely to face significant competition from clubs including Manchester United and Manchester City.

Everton receive Grealish blow
Wednesday 21 January 2026 12:46 , Alex DakersWe discussed Everton’s rumoured approach to this current transfer window a short while ago (see post at 11.53am GMT), and the Toffees have just received some worrying news about Jack Grealish.
The Manchester City loanee, 30, is set for three months on the side-lines with a stress fracture in his foot, it has been reported.
Will that impact David Moyes’s January plans?

Donnarumma would 'take' chance to return to Italy
Wednesday 21 January 2026 12:33 , Alex DakersThe agent of Gianluigi Donnarumma has suggested the Manchester City goalkeeper would accept a return to his native Italy if such a move was offered.
"Today at Manchester City, [Donnarumma] is finding serenity with the team and the environment, and he likes the project very much,” said Enzo Raiola, in an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai.
"He is also starting to understand the English championship. The other day he told me jokingly that playing five or six years there is an adventure, but it was a joke...
"However, if there is the opportunity to return to Italy, we will take it."
Donnarumma, 26, instantly became City’s first-choice goalie, displacing returning academy product James Trafford upon his arrival last summer from Paris Saint-Germain, where he won last year’s Champions League.

Brentford's January transfer business: Onyeka on the move?
Wednesday 21 January 2026 12:18 , Alex DakersFrank Onyeka is attracting interest from the Championship as Brentford work on January exits, writes Dom Smith.
Sheffield United and Frank Lampard’s Coventry have enquired about his availability. Valencia have also been credited with interest.
Brentford have already signed 18-year-old forward Kaye Furo from Club Brugge this month. They remain open to opportunities for the remainder of January but are already sitting pretty in seventh place in the Premier League under Keith Andrews.
Onyeka is one player who could be on the move, though. The midfielder has just been away at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he played four times for Nigeria, who finished third.

The 28-year-old has made just six appearances in the league this season but no starts, and Brentford are open to selling him or loaning him out with an option to buy.
The midfielder wants more game time and is not seen as being part of the long-term future at the Gtech Community Stadium, who last week handed a new four-and-a-half-year contract to fellow midfielder Vitaly Janelt. The German is viewed internally as having become a more important player at the club this season.
Brentford are keen on loaning out Brazilian 20-year-old Gustavo Nunes or 24-year-old English midfielder Paris Maghoma.
Standard Sport understands they are also open to sending a goalkeeper out on a six-month loan for more first-team experience.
Chelsea in Alvarez race
Wednesday 21 January 2026 12:07 , Alex DakersChelsea are reportedly among a litany of clubs vying to sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez.
So says the Daily Mail, amid widespread reports that the highly-rated Argentine will be considering his options this summer.
Alvarez, 25, has flourished in Spain over the last season and a half, netting 17 times in 37 La Liga appearances (plus seven more in 10 Champions League games) last term following his move from Manchester City before racking up 11 goals and five assists in 25 appearances between those two competitions so far in 2025/26.
He has been heavily linked with a switch to FC Barcelona as well as Paris Saint-Germain, so the Blues may have their work cut out to convince Alvarez to return to the Premier League.

Everton eyeing January loans ahead of summer spending spree
Wednesday 21 January 2026 11:53 , Alex DakersEverton will prioritise loan moves for the rest of the January transfer window in a bid to “bank” some PSR headroom before a possible £70 million summer spending spree.
That comes from The i Paper, which reports that a move for Fenerbahce striker Youssef En-Nesyri is rated as unlikely at this stage, while another possible target Callum Wilson may not be leaving West Ham this month after all.
Genoa right-back Brooke Norton-Cuffy could be available, but the Serie A side are said to prefer a permanent deal - possibly around £17 million - for the 22-year-old, rather than a loan.
Meanwhile, possible loans for Manchester United duo Joshua Zirkzee or Kobbie Mainoo now look less likely with Michael Carrick in the dugout at Old Trafford.
The Toffees are also said to be against allowing any players to leave Merseyside this month, despite interest in the likes of midfielder Tim Iroegbunam from the Championship.

Forest could let McAtee leave amid widespread interest
Wednesday 21 January 2026 11:40 , Alex DakersJames McAtee could leave Nottingham Forest in the current transfer window, it has been suggested.
Sky Sports’ Amar Mehta and Lyall Thomas say there is interest from at least one Premier League club in signing the 23-year-old on loan while the likes of Strasbourg, Besiktas, Porto and clubs in Germany “have also asked for information about a move in this window”.
Since joining Forest from Manchester City for £30m in the summer, McAtee - who has four-and-a-half years remaining on his deal - has struggled for regular gametime, starting just once in the Premier League and making six more appearances from the bench.

Chelsea 'winning the race' for Championship talent
Wednesday 21 January 2026 11:29 , Alex DakersChelsea are close to “winning the race” for Sheffield Wednesday youngster Yisa Alao, it has been reported.
