Tram disruption in Salford Quays after car crashes on to Metrolink tracks

Trams are disrupted in and around Salford Quays this evening, after a car crashed on the tracks.

Eyewitnesses report seeing a black Mercedes on the tracks near the Harbour City Metrolink stop shortly before 8.30pm.

It’s meant that trams ‘will operate Eccles to MediaCityUK ONLY and Ashton to The Trafford Centre’, Transport for Greater Manchester says.

The organisation tweeted at 8.25pm: “Due to a police incident at Harbour City there is a service change on the Eccles line.

“Services will operate Eccles to MediaCityUK ONLY and Ashton to The Trafford Centre.

“Passengers can use tickets on the 33 and 50 bus service.”

One man who was at the scene, but wished to stay anonymous, said a black Mercedes had ‘crashed through the bollard’ which divides the road from the tram tracks.

“The black car had driven on The Quays towards Anchorage,” he told the Manchester Evening News . “[It] had crashed through the bollard separating the road from the tram lines, there were several emergency vehicles in attendance, ambulance and fire brigade too.

“There was also a van further up the road with the front badly damaged."

“The trams have been disrupted, with only running between Media City and Eccles.”

Photos from the scene show the fire service in attendance.
