Trains down in Bristol as heavy rain "blocks lines"

Trains heading east from Bristol are down after heavy rain has "blocked the lines", Great Western Railway (GWR) have confirmed today (January 12).

So far, trains heading between Bristol Temple Meads to Swindon are experiencing substantial changes to their route; passengers at Bath Spa who are attempting to get to Bristol Temple Meads are having to go via Reading and Westbury, which according to GWR is the only route now available.

GWR has stated: "Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Swindon and Bristol Temple Meads, all lines are blocked. Train services running through these stations will be cancelled, delayed or diverted. Disruption is expected until 11:00."

They had previously alerted passengers that trains heading between Bristol Parkway and Swindon were also affected, but this has since been removed.

The disruption comes as the city finds itself in the middle of a Met Office yellow weather warning for rain, which is expected to last until at least 5pm today.

The following information on route diversions in place between Swindon and Bristol Temple Meads has been issued on their website:

"Due to the amount of water flowing on and around the Railway, it is not safe to run trains directly between Swindon and Bristol Temple Meads.

"Services between these two stations will diverted on alternative routes, however these take more time and therefore diverted services will incur delays.

"Passengers for Bath Spa at Swindon, you are advised to travel via Bristol Parkway and change at Bristol Temple Meads.

"Passengers for Bath at Bristol Temple Meads, you are advised to use the GWR services for Portsmouth Harbour stopping at Bath Spa.

"Passengers for Chippenham, you are advised that replacement road transport has been requested to run between Swindon and Chippenham in both directions, although unfortunately this has not yet been able to be fulfilled.

"Local bus ticket acceptance has been requested for GWR ticket holders."
