A person has died after being struck by a train between Ayr and Troon.
British Transport Police confirmed the tragic news after the line between the two towns was closed last night.
Officials say that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
ScotRail initially said that services would be cancelled, delayed or revised but tweeted last night that services had returned to normal.
The tweet read: "Disruption caused by a person being hit by a train between Troon and Ayr has now ended.
"Services between Glasgow Central and Ayr are no longer affected by this problem."
A BTP spokesperson said: "We were called at 5.13pm to reports of a casualty on the tracks near Newton-on-Ayr station.
"Officers and paramedics attended but sadly a person was declared deceased at the scene.
"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal."
